How We Bypassed the Humidity Problem with Metal Sheets: Our Fenceshop Experience

At Fenceshop, we often find ourselves tackling a wide range of customer needs, not just related to fence installation but also when it comes to solving issues involving the maintenance and improvement of particularly challenging environments—such as a garage with severe humidity problems. In this case, we want to walk you through, step by step, how we managed to transform a wall damaged by humidity into a surface with a modern, clean, and elegant look, using technical materials and practical solutions that could be useful to many of you.

Starting Point: A Wall Damaged by Humidity

Our customer contacted us to solve a long-standing problem: the walls of their garage were badly damaged due to persistent humidity. They had already tried several solutions, such as specific plasters and anti-humidity paints, but without satisfactory results. As often happens, if the humidity is rising from the ground and being absorbed by the walls, it is hard to eradicate it completely.

After discussing, we decided together to bypass the problem rather than try to resolve it once and for all. The goal was to protect and enhance the aesthetic appearance of the wall, preventing humidity from further damaging the visible surface of the garage.

Technical Solution: Support Structure and Expanded Metal Sheet

First, we installed vertical iron posts (U-profiles) about 4 cm thick, fixed to the wall with plugs spaced at the proper intervals. These profiles are hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated to provide superior resistance to rust and corrosion, which is essential in damp environments like this one.

The posts had a dual purpose:

• To provide solid support for the metal sheets to be installed afterward.
• To keep the cover spaced away from the wall, avoiding direct contact with humidity and promoting air circulation between the wall and the sheet.

For the cover, we chose a powder-coated expanded aluminum mesh. This type of metal sheet is special because, despite being perforated and creating a diamond pattern, it does not generate waste: the material is cut and stretched, forming a wavy effect that is strong, durable, and also visually appealing and modern. Powder-coated aluminum eliminates the risk of rust entirely, thus offering a long-lasting solution.

The Challenge: Fully Covering the Damaged Wall

Although the expanded metal mesh provided good coverage, once installed a few centimeters from the wall, the color and brightness of the wall underneath were still visible through the holes. The solution therefore was not entirely effective from an aesthetic point of view: the damaged wall remained partly visible, partly nullifying the work done.

A Simple and Effective Solution: Shade Cloth

As often happens, the most effective solution turned out to be the simplest: we decided to apply, between the wall and the metal mesh, a Soleado Glam shade cloth in gray. This is an entry-level product, very budget-friendly yet still able to provide optimal visual coverage.

• The cloths were stretched tight and fixed to the posts with screws, making sure they were taut to avoid folds or sagging.
• We then reinstalled the expanded metal sheets over the shade cloth.

This way, we achieved complete coverage: the damaged wall was no longer visible, and the surface took on a modern, clean, and uniform look. The air gap created between the wall, cloth, and sheet also ensures good ventilation and reduces the risk of further damage due to humidity.

Final Result and Finishing Touches

As shown in the project photos, the garage has been completely transformed: the space is now more tidy, elegant, and bright. All that remained to be done was finishing up details like reinstalling switches, electrical conduits, and lights, as well as finishing touches around sinks and in corners.

This experience shows how, with the right technical materials and a few practical tricks, it is possible to significantly improve even difficult settings such as humid garages—without necessarily resorting to invasive or expensive interventions.
