What Diameter of Posts to Choose?

Hello everyone, I am Marco from Fenceshop, the e-commerce of Rete Plastic. Today, we want to answer a frequently asked question: what diameter of posts to choose for fences? This video comes from a suggestion by a user who asked us to delve into this topic. We will talk about round posts and their various applications, both in residential and sport contexts.

Introduction: Variety of Round Posts

In the world of fences, there are various types of round posts, and it can be challenging to find your way. To make it easier for you, we will use a table from an Italian manufacturer of posts, Lider, which will help you choose the right diameter. The table you will see mainly refers to a residential context, but we will also give a brief explanation for sports fences.

Recommended Diameters for Residential Fences

The table shows various heights and the recommended diameters:

  • 1.20 m and 1.50 m: diameter of 34 mm
  • 1.75 m and 2 m: diameter of 38 mm (we recommend 48 mm for the 2 m)
  • 2.30 m, 2.60 m, and 3 m: diameter of 48 mm

We advise against the diameter of 38 mm for 2-meter posts, as it is too undersized. Furthermore, it is crucial to consider the thickness of the pipe, which should be at least 3.5 mm to ensure good resistance.

Recommended Diameters for Sports Fences

For sports or agricultural fences, we recommend the following diameters:

  • 1.20 m, 1.50 m, 1.75 m: diameter of 33-48 mm (better 48 mm)
  • 2 m, 2.20 m, 2.50 m, 3 m: diameter of 48 mm

For greater heights, such as 4 m, 5 m, and 6 m, we recommend a diameter of 60 mm. For heights of 7 m or more, the diameter shifts to 76 mm, or tapered posts, which have a larger diameter at the base and taper towards the top.

Recommended Thicknesses

For heights up to 3 meters, we suggest a thickness of 2 mm. For posts with a diameter of 76 mm or more, a thickness of 3 mm is necessary to ensure adequate resistance. It is pointless to exaggerate with thicknesses below 1.5 mm or above 4 mm unless there are mandatory technical specifications.

Conclusion

All the diameters and thicknesses we discussed are available on our Fenceshop store. You can find round posts of various heights and diameters in the dedicated section. We invite you to visit our e-commerce at www.fenceshop.eu and our institutional site at www.reteplastic.it.
