Creating a False Ceiling Protection for a Pavilion: Our Project in Turin

At Fenceshop, we deal with fences and mesh every day for multiple applications, but sometimes we face unique challenges that require custom solutions and a bit of ingenuity. In this in-depth article, we’ll walk you through how we created protection for the false ceiling of a historic pavilion, step by step, covering the work done, the difficulties encountered, and the technical solutions adopted. If you’re searching for ideas for unconventional uses of metal mesh, this experience could be helpful!

The Setting: Safety and Preserving Aesthetic Values

The project took place in Pavilion 5 of the Municipality of Turin, a historical building from the 1950s, once home to the Automobile Salon and now part of an urban redevelopment. The main requirement was to protect people from falling pieces of plaster and false ceiling, due to natural structural deterioration over time. It was crucial to guarantee safety without compromising the aesthetics and brightness of the space, using as non-invasive a solution as possible.

The Required Features for the Protection Mesh

To meet these needs, we had to select a metal mesh with specific technical characteristics:

  • Mesh size: Fine enough to stop small and medium-sized debris, but large enough to be barely noticeable.
  • Lightweight: Essential for easy ceiling installation and to reduce the load on the existing structure.
  • Fire resistance: Since it is a public environment, it was necessary to use a mesh that would not promote flame spread.
  • Durability: The solution had to ensure long-term longevity, without the need for frequent maintenance.

After careful evaluation, we chose the Trefort triple twist mesh by Cavatorta, a product that meets all these requirements and is available directly from our Fenceshop ecommerce.

The Technical Solution: Supporting Structure and Mesh Installation

Since there were no specific instructions for this type of work, we had to design and build a custom supporting structure. The process went as follows:

  • Installation of horizontal tension wires: We positioned galvanized wires 2 meters apart along the entire ceiling, anchoring them securely to the building’s structure with eyebolts.
  • Creating a “skeleton”: This grid of wires provided a solid, regular base on which to anchor the metal mesh.
  • Mesh installation: Using a rolling scaffold, we unrolled the mesh rolls (each weighing about 30 kg) along the tension wires, covering the entire length of the pavilion.

One of the main challenges was handling the weight and bulk of the rolls at height. To make this phase easier, we crafted a special accessory in our workshop: a tube to insert into the scaffold, equipped with two height-adjustable telescopic rods, allowing the roll to be supported and adjusted to the various slopes of the roof. This way, the mesh could be rolled out in a controlled and precise manner, following the pitch of the ceiling.

Challenges Encountered and How We Solved Them

The main difficulty was managing installation at height, considering both the weight of the rolls and the need to adapt to the ceiling’s slopes. The custom telescopic accessory allowed us to adjust the roll's angle and keep the mesh consistently positioned, making the operators’ work significantly easier. Once in position, the mesh was tied to the tension wires with appropriate wire ties, ensuring maximum adhesion and stability.

Final Result and Advantages of the Adopted Solution

The result was fully satisfactory: the Trefort triple twist mesh blends perfectly into the environment, remaining barely visible and allowing the pavilion's brightness to remain unchanged. Protection from falling debris is guaranteed, without affecting the aesthetics of the space. The intervention required several days of work and significant effort from our team, but achieved the requested safety and durability objectives set by the client.
