What is the ideal distance between fence posts?

Hello everyone, I am Marco from Fenceshop, the e-commerce site of Rete Plastic. Today we will talk about the ideal distance between the posts for your fence, a measurement technically known as the spacing. Spacing is the distance between the center of one post and the center of the other post.

Distinguishing between panel fences and rolled mesh fences

First of all, we need to distinguish the type of fence we intend to build: panel fences or fences with posts and rolled mesh. Spacing is particularly important in panel fences, especially if the posts need to be cemented into holes left in a wall. In this case, it is essential to be precise with the spacing. On the contrary, for fences on the ground, especially those with posts and rolled mesh, there is a wider margin of error.

Marking the spacing

To mark the spacing on a wall, we can use a string line, a tape measure, and chalk or a marker. We mark the exact point for each post. On the ground, the process is similar but more approximate: we lay a string line and use chalk to mark every two meters approximately.

Recommended spacing

For fences with posts and rolled mesh, the recommended spacing is two meters. This is a standard value that ensures a good balance between sturdiness and cost. However, we can vary the spacing according to specific needs:

  • Wider spacing: 2.5 - 3 meters
  • Narrower spacing: 1.5 - 1.7 meters

A wider spacing reduces costs but makes the fence less sturdy. Conversely, a narrower spacing increases sturdiness but also costs.

Panel fences

For panel fences, the spacing is determined by the panel itself. There are panels with spacings of 203 cm, 253 cm, and 200 cm. It is crucial to know the spacing of the chosen panel before preparing the holes in the wall. An error of a few centimeters can compromise the entire installation.

Tasselling fences

For tasselling fences, the problem of spacing does not exist as the post and panel are mounted gradually. In this case, spacing is less relevant as the panels are fixed directly with fix-ties.

Acceptable margin of error

On the ground, a small margin of error in spacing (up to 10-15 cm) is not visible to the naked eye. This means that you do not need to go crazy being extremely precise. If you decide on a spacing of two meters, a variation between 198 cm and 205 cm is acceptable.

Competition and costs

Spacing is a battleground with the competition. A wider spacing reduces the costs of the fence, so if a fence costs less, it could be because it is proposed with a wider spacing, making it less sturdy.
